Meet Rachel, Founder of Rachel Disalvo Ceramics

Meet Rachel Disalvo — ceramicist, mum of two, lover of spicy books and a woman after our own hearts. She’s got a 4-year-old daughter with more sass than a Real Housewife reunion and a tornado toddler who keeps her on her toes (and laughing). Oh, and there’s Trooper, the family’s giant fur baby who might just be part horse.

We bonded over a shared love for Kristin Hannah (though The Women takes the crown in our opinion), and knew we had to share her genius double-park swimming lesson combo — because we all know mums are constantly chasing the holy grail of tired, happy kids. This one's worth stealing.

What inspired you to start your business?

I think I’ve always been quite creative (something I got from my mum).

Before ceramics, I had a swimwear business and as my life changed, so did my interests.  I didn’t want to be in a bikini anymore (LOL) and turned to homewares. I wanted to create something with my hands, but also the flexibility to still do mum-life and that’s how Rachel Disalvo Ceramics came about.

There is still so much to learn about being a ceramist but I’m loving it. I’ve just recently created the cutest letters for kids' rooms.

What do you love about your work?

I love that I’m creating every piece with my hands and that no two pieces are the same, they are all unique.

What does a great day out with the kids look like?

When I have the kiddies during the week, we always have full days planned. On Monday for example, we do swimming lessons at Maroubra Swim School. Then depending on weather, we hit up Vitaland Alexandria if it’s raining and the kids froth on that. Or if the weather is nice, we go to the bike track at Heffron Park as the kids love their scooters. We’ll head home for lunch and a nap, and if they’re feeling energetic after that, which is 100% of the time, we’ll go to Chifley Reserve.

What’s on your family’s bucket list?

Disneyland is cliche, but it’s definitely up there (for me too!)

We took Florence to the snow  for the first time last year, so we’re very excited to get back there and take Franklin with us!

Just on the weekend we went to Glenworth Valley, about 40 mins out of Sydney, and Flo got to ride a horse, which she absolutely loved!

What’s your go-to thing to do when you have a kid-free moment?

Honestly straight to the lounge with a spicy book like Quicksilver or Iron Flame, or books by Kristin Hannah-The Great Alone is the best book I ever read!
